2022
About this winery
It was in 1985 in Mendavia that Barón de Ley settled in an old monastery, in the Navarrese region of DOCa Rioja. The cellar has positioned itself as a specialist in long-aging wines thanks to its Reservas and Grandes Reservas.

Product notes
Our red wines draw their structure and complexity from grapes grown around the 16th-century Benedictine monastery since 1985, thanks to the Mediterranean climate and the limestone gravel soils.
Production notes
The grapes, carefully selected from vineyards located very close to the winery, are hand-sorted and then vinified with great care in small stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels, followed by an additional 6 months of maturation in 10,000-liter foudres in the monastery’s cellars, a place steeped in history inherited from the Benedictine order that gave its name to our flagship cuvée. This type of aging, combining barrels and large vessels, reduces contact with the wood, softens the tannins, limits woody aromas, and allows for longer refinement.
Tasting notes
An iconic wine of the estate, this deep red displays a bright cherry color with purple hues. The nose is expressive and complex, combining black fruit compote, liquorice, balsamic oak, spices, and subtle milky and roasted notes. On the palate, the wine is intense, structured, and complex, while maintaining a pleasant freshness throughout. Rooted in historical heritage, it pairs beautifully with beef steaks, slow-cooked dishes, or game, paying tribute to the hunting tradition of the Sanz-Pastor family, the last residents of the estate before the founding of Barón de Ley. Recommended serving temperature: 16–18 °C.
