About this winery

Founded in 1879 by the brothers Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asua, the Compañia Vinicola del Norte de España is one of the oldest estates in La Rioja. C.V.N.E. is located in Haro, in the traditional wine trade district, next to the train station. In this period when transport was not very advanced, there was a definite advantage in locating your cellar very close to a train station! By 1900, this company had more than 80,000 bottles intended for prolonged aging, which was rare at that time...

Product notes

The Virgen del Galir winery was founded in 2002 in a valley of the Galir river, in Éntoma, a small village of Ourense, in Galicia, in the north of Spain. The semi-forgotten region of Valdeorras DO has extraordinary vineyards. La Virgen del Galir has 20 hectares of vines on almost as many plots, in a valley of the River Galir. The altitude is over 600 m. The ground is almost entirely made up of schist decomposed into terraces.

Production notes

The grapes were harvested by hand in 15 kg boxes and cooled before a 48 hour cold maceration in the tank before fermentation. The grapes were destemmed but not crushed in order to preserve the aromas and fermented with indigenous yeasts. Ten months in French and American oak barrels.

Tasting notes

Pagos de Galir Mencía 2018 has a colorful and dark color with fruity aromas, spicy and balsamic notes. The palate is fruity, fresh and silky. A wine with velvety tannins, with a slightly acidic finish and a long, mineral aftertaste. Pairing with cold cuts, tapas and red meats

James Suckling, November 2021 (Vintage 2019)

A perfumed nose of cherries, raspberries, redcurrants, dried roses and sweet spices. It’s medium-bodied with sleek tannins and bright acidity. Succulent and juicy with fruity character. Fresh and lively. Supple finish. Drink now or hold.

Luis Gutiérrez, February 2022 (Vintage 2019)

The red 2019 Pagos del Galir Mencía was produced with grapes from two plots in the village of Éntoma planted with a small percentage of other grapes, Brancellao, Sousón and Garnacha Tintorera. The terraced vines were planted in 1998 on slate soils, and the grapes were picked late, the last to be picked in the village. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and open-top barrels and matured in used 500-liter oak barrels for 10 months. It's quite ripe at 14% alcohol and has mellow acidity. It's more serious, with dark berry fruit, more in the style of a northern Rhône, juicy and meaty. It has a medium body and very fine tannins, integrated oak (they stopped using small barrels and went for larger ones) and a long, dry finish. Ripe but fresh. 13,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2021.
